"It is said that if you want to know what you were doing in the past, look at your body now; if you want to know what will happen to you in the future, look at what your mind is doing now."

What is equivalency and how do I obtain it? PDF Print E-mail
Equivalency, like the word suggest, is the recognition of a pre-existing Dan grade Diploma from another ryu/school or style by The International Budo Institute.

Often, students obtain a Dan grade in a martial art and then for some reason they stop practicing or their grading is lost. There are many reasons for this. Everyone leads very busy lives and often young adults end up taking on a lot of responsibility in their late 20's and 30's and extra time for martial arts training isn't found until later, so they come back. Or, the case may be that an original style or school no longer exist or is very small. Unfortunately, teachers pass-away and even strong schools can disintegrate. These are just two examples. Whatever the case may be, equivalency enables a student to bring their old Dan Diploma up to date. It also is a good way to begin your membership in The Institute as you will be recognized for your previous Budo achievement and then can decide whether you wish to take on the challenge of a higher Dan course.

In order to seek equivalency, The IBI needs to receive a copy of the original Diploma. Once this is received along with the necessary fee to cover processing fees, a new Dan Diploma and Title Diploma will be issued. As well, the student will be given a new Black Belt with his or her name written in Kanji along with the name of Bubishido. This is definitely the way to go for any student wishing to restart his or her martial arts career.

Equivalence is not available below Black Belt and any student below Black Belt would be required to complete the curriculum under the monitoring of one of The Institute's black belts.
