1809-1896 Matsumura
Sokon was born in 1809 in Shuri's Yamakawa Village. Born to a
good family, he studied the Classics and Calligraphy. He
also studied the art of the fist but it is unknown who he studied from. Matsumura also studied Chuan Fa (kempo)
in Fuzhou China. He made three trips to Fuzhou, were he made an
impression. Matsumura Sokon also mastered the principles of Jigen-Ryu
Kenjutsu while stationed in Satsuma, Japan.
By age 30, Master Matsumura's prominent reputation as a bushi secured him a position of personal advisor and te instructor to the King. In fact, he was employed by three kings, Shoko, Shoiku and Shotai before his retirement.
In
1879, King Shotai abdicated, his kingdom was turned over to the
Prefectural control of Japan and he was ordered to move to Tokyo.
Matsumura was effectively out of work at the age of 70. Master
Matsumura became reclusive and spent the remainder of his life
dedicated to developing and teaching karatedo.
The principal students of Master Matsumura Sokon are: Itosu
Anko, Kuwae Ryosei, Yabu Kentsu, Funakoshi Gichin, Hanashiro
Chomo, Kyan Chotoku, Azato Chikudon Peichin, Kiyuna
Chikudon Peichin, and Sakiyama Chikudon Peichin. |
