Roundhouse Kick-#2
Techniques - Basics: Kicks
The Roundhouse kick or Mawashi Geri may be performed in two variations. The first variation is the most common where the kick comes around the front from the back position and the opponent is struck with the top of the foot, as in Roundhouse Kick #1. This is shown elsewhere in this section.

The second variation, #2, is where the kick originates from underneath the buttocks and kicks out similar to a side kick and the opponent is struck with the bottom or heel of the foot. This variation is shown below in the schematic highlighting the different paths that either variation follows.

Both variation #1 and #2 of the kick are popular and both are referred to as roundhouse kicks. Also, some martial artists once mastering these two basic variations also throw this kick merging the two variations into a variety of attack angles or styles and thus it can be difficult to know exactly from where the technique will originate and/or what the intended target is. Thus, you must take care in trying to ascertain from the opponent what type of kicking style he uses so that you can appropriately defend against it.

Take a fighting stance with a mid-level open or closed hand guard.

Open the stance by rotating the heel of the front foot inward.

Bring the kicking leg forward and up in front of your body. The top of thigh is parallel to the ground. Keep a front guard to protect against an attack or counter to the upper body.

Propell the kicking leg out toward the opponent in a straight line toward his groin, stomach, neck or face. Make contact using the bottom of the foot. When kicking to the throat try to strike with the side of the foot (as a knife technique) for maximum penetration. Also, when executing the technique turn the heel of the supporting leg toward the opponent in order to assist with the mechanics of the kick, this will increase the power of the thrust.
