Newsflash

"It is something that stops the conflicts between person and person, that contributes to peace and culture, and that has a moral content which expresses the path of harmonious cooperation (bringing minds into harmony and uniting efforts). It never injures an opponent carelessly, seeks conflicts, or seeks solely the goal of winning against an opponent." Moreover, "budo conforms to the above meaning of 'bu,' and is a path to achieving that goal." And, "it is a path that is capable of contributing to humankind's peace and well being."

Forward Sanchin
Techniques - Basics: Hourglass Walking Form

In this series of photos you see the Sanchin Hoko walking form going forward without blocks. The important points to remember is that once you begin to move forward you need to:

Image
1. Assume a left Hourglass (Sanchin) fighting stance in a diagonal position to the opponent. Fists are closed and kept at the side of the body.

Image
2. Open the lead leg by turning the left foot counter-clockwise on the ball of the foot in preparation for forward movement.

Image
3. Move the right (back) leg forward so that the feet meet in parallel fashion. The body is now facing forward and the knees are slightly bent.

Image
4. Step the right foot out to place the body in a diagonal fighting position with the right side closest to the opponent.

Thus, you have successfully moved one step forward from a left Hourglass Stance (Sanchin Dachi) into a right Hourglass Stance (Sanchin Dachi). Other important points to remember for all the series are:

    1. Keep a tight posture throughout the motion.
    2. Always keep your eyes and focus on your target directly ahead.
    3. Keep your chin down to protect the neck.
The Hourglass Walking Form (Sanchin Hoko) is a walking form that allows you to remain very protected while moving forward or back. The tight posture protects the groin area and your hand position protects your mid section and head. Repeat the process sevel times switching back and forth.
