Back stance.
This stance is primarily used when evading a roundhouse kick. Sensei Kukura is demonstrating the correct posture for assuming the Back stance. In this posture the weight is 80% on the back leg and 20% on the front. This stance generally uses a lower guard as it is used when blocking an oncoming leg technique. Naturally, any guard is appropriate depending on the situation at hand.
When this stance is performed using the Hasso Kamae versatile guard then it is known as the Snake stance.
Below, Shihan Henderson is performing the Back stance from all four directions.
Common errors include: 1. not placing enough weight on the back leg, 2. sitting in too centered a position, 3. tilting the upper body too far backward and, 4. placing the hands in the wrong position.
