#1. Style or school of Shorin ji fighting techniques.

#2. Shorinjiryu is a name used by various styles of karate that evolved from Sokon Matsumura of Shuri-te lineage, through to Chotoku Kyan (1870-1945). Various disciples of Kyan carried on his teachings, synthesizing their own methods and those acquired from other teachers, into their own systems. In the modern world there are various groups of Shorinjiryu, including - Shorinjiryu Kenkokan Karate, founded by Kori Hisataka (1907-1988) - Shorinjiryu Seibukan, founded by Zenryo Shimabukaru - Okinawan Shorinjiryu, founded by Joen Nakazato (1922-) - Shorinjiryu Renshinkan, founded by Isamu Tamotsu (1920-2000)

Most groups of Shorinjiryu utilise shorter stances, and emphasize speed and mobility. Expanded use of the hips is stressed. Many Shorinjiryu groups have experimented with the use of Bogu (protective full contact equipment).
