Newsflash

I have often wondered how it is that every man loves himself more than all the rest of men, but yet sets less value on his own opinions of himself than on the opinions of others.

Below is a video representation of Nijushiho Kata as performed by Shihan Henderson. Students should note that Nijushiho contains both a left and right side. Thus, the movements below should be mirrored on the opposite side.

This Kata is usually taught as the second Kata within the syllabus of The International Budo Institute. Naihanchin Kata, previously shown, focuses on lateral movements while Nijushiho now has the student focusing on circular movements. The two Kata are complimentary in this manner. Nevertheless, students usually have a favourite between the two depending on their own personal preference.

Kata Nijushiho

As mentioned, Nijushiho focuses on circular motions with strong and sharp hitting and chopping (slicing) techniques. It is typically performed with open hands for grappling purposes. In this regard it introduces the novice student to a new dimension of their Budo training.

Where Naihanchin Kata is strong with techniques deriving from the Horse Stance and its applications, Nijushiho is much lighter and a swifter moving Kata primarily deriving from the Cat Stance. Try to keep these thoughts in mind when you are performing the techniques.

Lastly, if you are the type of student who tenses up easily during Kata practice you must learn to loosen the muscles and let them relax so that the cicular techniques flow from one to the other.

Once a fair level of understanding of this Kata is obtained the real beauty of this Kata will start to show itself to you and many years of exploration will be available if you chose to further peel back the onion skin. I believe this Kata to be an essential Kata of the true Shorinjiryu philosophy of movement.
