The following is the video representation of the Kata Koshiki Naihanchin as
performed within the syllabus of The International Budo Institute. The
sequence below is the right side of the Kata. The identical mirror
images are taught on the left side as well. Home study students should
focus on learning the right side and perfecting those moves before
trying to mirror the movements on the left side.
As mentioned elsewhere, all the Naihanchin Kata(s) are considered fundamental Kata of The Institute. The Kata stresses lateral movement with strong blocking, elbow, punching and kicking techniques.
This Kata is passed down to The Institute through the lineage of Shinan Masayoshi Hisataka originating from the techniques of Kudaka-Ryu (Kudaka Island, Okinawa). Koshiki Naihanchin is often taught to children and/or as the first Kata in the adult curriculum. It is a short Kata yet can be complex when studied for its subtleties.
Koshiki Naihanchin is among the oldest Kata, having been originally developed on Kudaka Island, Okinawa. In turn the kata evolved into its modern form in Okinawa, having been handed down from Tode Sakugawa to Sokon Matsumura and to Ankoh Asato and Chotoku Kyan. All the Naihanchin Kata are considered representative of the Shuri Te Shorinjiryu. It is interesting to note that the famous Master Choki Motobu, in his pursuit of Karatedo, is thought to have only learnt two kata: Naihanchin and Bassai. This shows that a true understanding of a kata can only be gained from proper and deep study, and that such a deep level of understanding of but a handful of kata can lead to a complete understanding of Budo.
