Heian Kata Series PDF Print E-mail
24-June-2006

Starting this week we will be uploading the five Heian Katas (one per week) also known as the Pinan Katas. Shihan York has been very busy getting these videos created so that all of the visitors and students of the site can enjoy and learn from them. It is with great pleasure and pride that we make them available in our open access program here on the site.

So please be sure to visit back later on this week (sometime around Wednesday) for the first in the series. The 5 kata are known as: Heian Ichi or Heian Shodan, Heian Nidan, Heian Sandan, Heian Yondan and Heian Godan. These kata(s) form the basis of the syllabus for many Budo styles and as such are very important. As a student you may choose to learn all five or pick only a couple within your larger study program. When I first began budo studies my sensei Shihan Donivan taught me Heian Nidan and Heian Yondan. If you find all five a challenge you might want to pick the two that I originally learnt as I found those two to be very interesting and fun to practice.

Note that these kata, like all our kata, are filmed at approximately 75% speed for learning purposes. Lastly, let's all thank Shihan York for his efforts in making these videos available. If you have any questions on these Kata(s) Shihan York would be more than happy to discuss them with you by email.
