16-August-06

This week Shihan Henderson and Shihan York video tapped all the junior yakusoku kumites and they will be uploaded to the site in the coming weeks. The kumites that were video tapped include:

  • Gohono Ichi
  • Gohono Ni
  • Gohono San
  • Renshu Ichi
  • Nijushiho Waza
  • Randori Go
  • Sankakutobi Shodan Ichi
  • Randori Ni

As many of you know yakusoku kumite means 1. Prearranged fighting, or 2. A promise between offensive and defensive partners to perform prearranged fighting techniques in an effort to better learn timing, distance and opportunity. These drills are an essential part of all Shorinjiryu schools that trace their lineage to Dr. Kori Hisataka. All levels of students can practice yakusoku kumite so come back in the near future to see the new releases.

Lastly, yakusoku kumite should not be mistaken with the common term "kumite" which many martial arts schools use to mean fighting or sparring. At the International Budo Institute, as in many Shorinjiryu schools, the term used for sparring is "Shiai".
